By Mike Nichols -WPRI Almost two full years ago, right at the height of a heated legislative debate in Madison over whether to expand school choice, Disability Rights Wisconsin and the ACLU filed a complaint with the U.S. Department of Justice alleging that schools in the Milwaukee Parental Choice Program discriminate against children with disabilities.

Today, State Superintendent of Public Instruction Tony Evers made a bold statement concerning funding for education in Wisconsin. In his opening remarks, Sup. Evers said “This has to stop. The state cannot continue to play favorites,” when it came to funding.

A majority of registered voters in Wisconsin support expanding the parental school choice program, according to a Marquette University Law School Poll released on Tuesday.

Madison - Gov. Scott Walker is proposing increasing by at least 9% the taxpayer funding provided to private and religious voucher schools - an increase many times larger in percentage terms than the increase in state tax money proposed for public schools.

National School Choice Week took place from January 27-February 2, with featured public events in different cities and states along with a Whistle Stop tour in select places. NSCW made several stops in Wisconsin, including Milwaukee, Racine, and Kenosha.

According to an article by Hillary Gavan in the Beloit Daily News the Beloit School District “is opposed to private-school vouchers, or school choice, in Beloit because the alternative schools wouldn’t have to play by the same rules and would drain public schools of resources in a time of massive.”
